The Trapeze Swinger

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Please, remember me
Seldomly
In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees
You turn from me
And said 'The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last'

I have been without the internet for the past two weeks, so please forgive my absence. I wanted to post the first good almost-complete image of my host family (excluding お父さん who took the picture).

(The woman on the right kneeling a little is actually another former exchange student). From right to left: Me, Yugo (brother, third son), first son and his wife, and お母さん in the front.

お父さん is adorable, yes? Very silly man. XD

First son, who's name is Maasaki, and his wife. They have a baby on the way!

At the moment, I confess I feel rather strange. The pervading sense of sadness that has always been with me has returned, and I feel something dark and heavy on my chest that sort of crawls up my throat and strangles for voice. I have never known what to call this feeling, only that I've learned to suppress it so much that I haven't thought about it. But these days, it creeps up slowly.

The Trapeze Swinger...is just designed to make us cry. My favorite line MIGHT be:

But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted

...:/ brb sobbing into my pillow.

I still love your outfit in you sans-otoosan-family-pic. Sup Nana? UH HUH. YOU HEARD ME. THE LEADER OF THE BLACK STONES IS ACTUALLY A PARTY RICAN.

Your writing reminded me of something from a certain piece of literature...
"It's not that he seeks out silence, in darkened places where the world shirks away from life and laughter, but it seems to [him] more and more, now, that silence seeks him out, and that sometimes it's better to be in the places where it doesn't matter if you feel deaf, heavy, ugly, useless. It's worse when it finds him in bed, or in class, where the words leave his mouth like a curse, and he can't find the answers that they want, because his tongue is drowned in emptiness."

This isn't really even relevant, but I had to get that association out of my head.

Anyway, we talked about this a little last night, but I'm not very good at relaying my thoughts in a clear way...but I hope that strange feeling goes away or hibernates for a while. Go listen to some Arashi!! Maybe that only works for me lol.

oh no! don't be sad :(

no internet for two weeks? oh man! i love the host family portrait..very nice.
This might seem very random, but i really like your outfit in that pic! :)

Aww don't be sad! *tackles and hugs* i kinda know what you mean though. *more hugs and some candy*

La Semana Oro? (Mon-Weds)

Monday, I spent the day in Ikebukuro. The plan was to go to the aquarium there, but Christie, Nessa, Amy, and I just ended up shopping and eating Korean food. Bibimbap is my new favorite thing ever. <3

Eating Korean food, here with Nessa. <3 According to Christie, it wasn't that good, but I liked it! The bottom of the Bibimbap burns a little, so it gets crunchy. Spanish people love crunchy rice. XD

That night, I met some friends to go to a hookah bar. It was Aki's (a sophomore I met at Sophia) first time smoking, so it was exciting. XD She definitely was a bit lightheaded. I took lots of pictures of them having fun with the smoke~

The first puff!

This goes against hookah etiquette but everyone was up for it.

I asked the waitress to take a picture of us. =)

We were lucky enough to go on a night when the belly dancer was performing!

Tuesday, Leina arrived in Tokyo from Kyoto! I took her to the maid cafe we went to before, just for fun since it was raining heavily and indoor activities seemed best. With us: Hiromi, Ryan and Kyle.

In Akihabara. SO CUTE. They are so serious about advertising there. o_O

Kyle and Ryan with their parfait at the maid cafe. You have to order something. :O

After that, I took Leina to Harajuku for the best crepes in Japan. ♥ Even though it was raining, there were still SO MANY people in Harajuku, up and down Takeshita Dori, a street packed with trendy young clothing shops, crepes, and accessories. I bought a cute pink umbrella and a Tiramisu crepe.

Umbrellas as far as the eye can see! Hiromi crouched down, since she's so small, to get her umbrella past the multitudes. She looked like a turtle. XD

We did karaoke in Harajuku, and went to Shibuya to eat Okonomiyaki again because I wanted Hiromi and Ryan to try it! I know Kyle wants to try different places to eat, but I am a creature of habit! ;) Then we went to Bookoff, a cheap used book/cd/dvd store and I bought Jeanine two Johnny's magazines with lots of pictures of Arashi in them.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the outdoor event at Yoyogi Park for Jesus Lifehouse, the church I attend, was changed into an indoor event at Shibuya. It was fun! We did Karaoke, played Darts, and Billiards together! Bowling and table tennis were also options, but with a long long wait. Christie and I started a massage line as we waited for out turn at Darts.

The Nihonjin with us were very confused. The spoke no English, but we had a good time playing and communicated in Japanese! I loved it.

Me and Takeshi bond over a game of air hockey. We made a good team. ;D

As a massive group, we attempted to take purikura. It was an effort. :O

Afterwards, we played some arcade games. I owned Hiroaki at Street Fighter, and I think he was surprised. XD After a long battle, Takeshi finally beat me.

Satoru, Takeshi, Hiroaki, Christie, and Kyle went to McDonald's for dinner, and I went home for some home cooking. <3 I love making new friends. ^_~ Enjoyable days so far...Today is my last day of Golden Week. Friday, I have class, and moreover, I have a Japanese test. Off to study! Peace.

Hey,
Looks like u had a blast during Golden Week! haha i like crunchy rice too, guess i get that from my dad, cuz my mom can't stand it!

The hookah bar looked awesome, and the bellydancer was really good. They had a free bellydancing class at my school, i couldn't make it though. I kinda want to try it though, whether or not i'll be good at it is another story haha

The sea of umbrellas made me LOL, but i love the variety, here it's just basic black or maybe red if you wanna get a little crazy! And i think the purika came out pretty well considering the huge group...it looks likeu blew a heart bubble :)
<3

Bibimbap? Oishi sou. o__o And yes...we do seem to love the crunchy rice, as a general statement. x)

LMAO WTF THAT PICTURE OF KYLE. KOWAI. I like the group picture though. ~Kewl kidz~

Aww it's a Hamiruton Daigaku reunion. :D That huge plushie though... someone is in there right? I wonder if they are smiling... LOL.

Wow that is a lot of umbrellas - it seems like you wouldn't even need one - just walk under different people's. Heehee.

Okonomiyaki... food has been pretty gross lately, so I'm dying for something awesome like that. Dx

You know I love my Johnny boys. T___T Especially Arashi. And excluding Kat-tun.... >:3

Jesus Lifehouse sounds like a blast! Even more fun then those Yogi missionaries we used to go to after Ralph Bunche LOL.

Massage Line? O__O I'd be like WTF too... and why do you look like a giant???

I've heard people say that Nihonjin usually know a lot of English... or at least some. Is this true or not in your experience?

Awesome Purikura picture omg. Although someone looks like they are dying in the background.

Home cooking yay for you! =)
Golden week sounds so funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Gah. I'm glad it was. <3

amkia!! you should go for the belly dancing! i was so jealous! i wanted to join her hahaha. XD

Some Nihonjin know a lot of English...some don't. It all depends! Korean food is soooo good! I am getting so fat. ;_; I gotta stop the sweets. kekekeke. strict diet upon my return.

btw, i was standing on a chair lol.

that huge plushie thing was so short! as we were leaving he was going inside the store, so everyone was patting him on the head, and i was like "otsukare" kekeke.

how u doing bb?

i totally misread hookah bar for hooker bar... :(

i leave japan in 11 hours!!!!! T_T

ゴールデンウィーク...始まる!

Saturday, May 2, 2009

Friday was the start of ゴールデンウィーク (Golden Week), a week of traveling and playing, and tom foolery. I don't have classes until Friday! Whoooo!

Classes went by relatively quickly, and I did not have any plans so I loitered around a bit. Norbert (half Hungarian, half Korean raised in Japan) invited me to his little birthday celebration. He turned 20-the legal age in Japan! Amy, Kyle, Christie, and I went to eat dinner first and found an Okonomiyaki restaurant. Okonomiyaki is the best thing ever! I want to eat it everyday. You have to make it yourself at the restaurant, and me and Kyle took control of all the cooking since Amy and Christie looked a little clueless. (I love you tho, k.)

This is what the perfect Okonomiyaki looks like. Inside: egg, cabbage, bacon, squid, shrimp, some kind of potato and on top, oyster sauce, mayo, and bonito flakes. It's good for you!

In the making. The people next to use saw us looking at theirs and offered us a taste hahaha.

Food makes me and Christie sooo happy.

After, Christie and Kyle got crepes, and me and Kyle went back to Yotsuya to meet Norbert and his friends. Met some cool people, and Norbert taught us some Japanese slang/curse words in Hungarian. He'll probably regret that later!

Saturday Christie, Jordan, Yasu, Takuma and I spent the day in Yokohama, which is the city I live in. I met Yasu and Takuma at the English speaking club. Takuma is a student at my university, and his English is rather good! Yasu's English is adorable! That's all I can say ahhaha. In Japan, you would call this a date apparently, since a date is any outing with the opposite sex. HMM.

Aren't we cute?! :D From left to right: Yasu, Takuma, Me, Christie, and Jordan in the back. In case you're wondering, Jordan is 6'6" and the tallest person I have ever met. <3

We ate lunch in Chinatown and bought bubble tea and sesame balls filled with anko (GREASY DELICIOUSNESS!) We walked around looking for presents to bring back to our friends.

Leaving Chinatown.

We walked to Yamashita Park where we saw a man juggling fire, then swallowing the flame. :O

Group pic! We boarded the ship in the back, which had been historically preserved on the inside! We wanted a titanic scene picture but the front of the ship was blocked off.

I settled for a captain's pic.

Christie and I wanted to ride the ferris wheel, so we walked around the park until it was dark since the atmosphere is better at night.

This is how we amused ourselves.

We ended up riding a roller coaster instead because the line for the ferris wheel was SOOOO LONG. (Couple's night!) But it was fun, if only toooo short! I need more intense rides now! We also rode a weird ride that spun you 360 degrees, upside down. And of course, we finished with some purikura!

Zya, mata. ♥
